Green Inventor’s Contest

In-ven-t-ing (dfn): identifying a need and devising a solution

Mission: To foster pre-engineering and design techniques that promote sustainability (economy, society or the environment) in the Iron Range Community.

Competition Expectations:

  • Your invention should follow the theme of “green” innovation (making the Earth, our community or the economy a better place)
  • Inventions may be developed and entered for competition by a single person or a pairing
  • All entries must be original, the sole work of the entrant(s) and should not be the work of someone else (including parents/guardians)
  • All entries must have an entry form postmarked on/before March 23, 2012. Entry forms can be mailed or emailed (addresses are located on the bottom of the entry form)
  • All entries must have an informational poster for the invention AND: A small-scale model of the invention, OR a prototype of the actual invention
  • Entries will be judged on the following criteria:

o Creativity

o Originality

o Practicality of the invention

o Value/Benefit of the invention

o Clarity of poster (information)

o Quality of model/replica

  • All entries must be presented at the Iron Range Earth Fest (April 21, 2012) by the entrant(s) for judging. Judging will occur on Saturday, April 21 from 10:00 AM to noon. If there is a scheduling conflict, the entrant(s) can opt to create four index cards with one trivia question/answer on each card. These trivia cards must accompany the poster and replica/prototype.
  • Prizes will be awarded for the top three places in each grade category: Level I (grades 4-6), Level II (grades 7-9) and Level III (grades 10-12) In all levels 1st place = $50, 2nd place = $35 and 3rd place = $25
  •  All entries (posters/models/replicas) must be picked up at 4:30 on April 21st at Merritt Elementary School between 4-5 PM. Doors will close at 5 PM.

    Think of sustainability like a three legged stool. For a community to be sustainable, the three elements of community, economy and environment all need to exist in a healthy holistic relationship, or like a stool with one leg too long or too short that won’t stand up, our communities won’t be sustainable for those future generations.
